There are many reasons why people with a uterus may develop abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). And&nbsp;<strong>Even women who do not have any associated medical conditions may experience concerning blood loss during and outside of their menstrual period<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, heavy bleeding has such a negative impact on patients\u2019 physical, emotional, sexual, and professional lives that it impairs their quality of life to the point of preventing them from performing daily activities and forcing them to undergo emergency treatment or highly invasive surgeries,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/diariodonordeste.verdesmares.com.br\/ultima-hora\/pais\/entenda-o-que-e-histerectomia-cirurgia-feita-por-carla-gabola-1.3537449\">such as the complete removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the good news is that, in most cases, conservative treatment is available\u2014that is, treatment that avoids invasive procedures. The most important thing is to determine the cause of the bleeding early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-o-que-e-sangramento-uterino-anormal-sua\"><strong>What is abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A classification system developed by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) called \u201cPalm-Coein\u201d identifies the following as the main causes of abnormal uterine bleeding\u2014excluding the possibility of pregnancy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structural causes<\/strong>:&nbsp;<strong>P<\/strong>olipho,&nbsp;<strong>A<\/strong>denomyosis,&nbsp;<strong>L<\/strong>eiomyoma,&nbsp;<strong>M<\/strong>alignments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-structural causes<\/strong>:&nbsp;<strong>C<\/strong>oagulopathy,&nbsp;<strong>O<\/strong>voluntary,&nbsp;<strong>E<\/strong>ndometrial,&nbsp;<strong>I<\/strong>atrogenic,&nbsp;<strong>N<\/strong>Unclassified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In patients at low risk for endometrial cancer who have normal test results and in whom natural causes have been ruled out, bleeding can be treated with medication or surgery. However, structural lesions classified as \u201cPalm\u201d require specific treatment, depending on the diagnosis. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When is bleeding considered abnormal?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the gynecologist <strong>Morgana Domingues, a consultant at Biolab Farmac\u00eautica, says that during a \u201cnormal\u201d menstrual cycle, blood loss ranges from 70 millimeters to 80 ml<\/strong>. \u201cIn cases of heavy bleeding, that volume can be as much as double,\u201d the doctor explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs that the patient may notice herself include blood staining her clothing, having to change sanitary pads excessively often within a short period of time (two to three hours), needing to change a sanitary pad at night, and passing blood clots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Difference Between Abnormal Uterine Bleeding and Irregular Menstruation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Irregular menstruation is a type of abnormal uterine bleeding<\/strong>. According to the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (Febrasgo), menstruation is considered \u201cnormal\u201d when bleeding lasts up to eight days and the cycle ranges from 24 to 38 days. Any bleeding that does not fit these characteristics is considered abnormal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, one of the possible causes of \u201cirregular\u201d menstruation is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/diariodonordeste.verdesmares.com.br\/ser-saude\/ovario-policistico-o-que-e-sintomas-e-como-tratar-1.3452559\">polycystic ovary syndrome<\/a>, which, due to its complexity, is rarely diagnosed during the first few years of a teenager's menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince irregular menstrual cycles are common in the first few years after the onset of menstruation, diagnosing the syndrome is more difficult at this stage, requiring long-term follow-up and periodic reevaluations to confirm the diagnosis,\u201d advises Febrasgo.<br><br>\u201cMenstrual irregularity is a specific term for a change in the menstrual cycle. It occurs when the intervals between periods become different, or when a patient menstruates more or fewer times per month, or in a completely irregular and unpredictable manner. So, in these cases, when we talk about menstrual irregularity, we\u2019re referring more to the irregular frequency of menstruation,\u201d explains gynecologist Morgana Domingues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What causes abnormal uterine bleeding?<\/strong><br>Like polycystic ovary syndrome, abnormal uterine bleeding can be caused by various conditions recognized in medicine. According to Morgana, heavy bleeding can be caused by polyps\u2014nodular growths that appear in the endometrium\u2014and by adenomyosis, another condition affecting the endometrium that primarily affects younger women and causes not only bleeding but also increased menstrual cramps.<br>In addition, fibroids, bleeding disorders, ovulation disorders, and malignant diseases can also cause an increase in the amount and frequency of bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>There are also patients who have no comorbidities whatsoever, no associated diseases<\/strong>. \u201d.
