A partnership between the academic community and the pharmaceutical industry has brought historic relief to public health in the municipality of Castanhal, in Pará. The Surgical Expedition of the USP School of Medicine (FMUSP), in an unprecedented partnership with the Biolab & Co., held 1,430 medical visits during a ten-day immersion in the region.

In total, the initiative accounted for 493 surgical procedures e 937 diagnostic tests, transforming the lives of hundreds of families in Pará. The Biolab & Co., which ranks among the country's top ten pharmaceutical groups, was the first company in the industry to officially support the initiative.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and a Focus on Minimally Invasive Technology

The project mobilized a veritable task force: about 100 volunteers, including medical students and renowned specialists in the fields of gynecology, gastroenterology, dermatology, and radiology.

What really set this edition apart was its focus on laparoscopic surgeries (minimally invasive procedures). This technique drastically reduces patients’ hospital stays, lowers the risk of hospital-acquired infections, and speeds up postoperative recovery, allowing residents to return to their daily routines more quickly.

The operation was strategically divided between two main hospital facilities in the municipality:

  • São José Hospital: It focused on gynecological and gastrointestinal procedures. The facility had 5 operating rooms, 26 inpatient beds, 2 ICU beds, and 8 ultrasound rooms.
  • Castanhal Municipal Hospital: He was put in charge of cutaneous oncology (dermatology), focusing on melanoma and epidermal cyst surgeries, in addition to providing two examination rooms dedicated to IUD insertions.

Impact Beyond the Office

Founded in 2013, the FMUSP Surgical Expedition It is run by students, doctors, and professors with the goal of promoting volunteerism and compassionate medical care in vulnerable regions of Brazil. For the Biolab & Co., support for the project reinforces the view that corporate responsibility should transcend geographic boundaries.

“Taking care of people’s health means being attentive to everything that affects their lives, from north to south. Biolab & Co.”s work goes beyond medications: we care about the ecosystem that surrounds the Brazilian population,” he says Tati Marques, Director of Communications and Impact at Biolab & Co. “It is a privilege to support such an important project, which allows us to promote health, inclusion, and socioeconomic development in the communities that need it most.”

In addition to reducing the waiting lists for surgeries in the region, the mission left a sustainable legacy for local healthcare. Over the course of ten days, the team promoted the education and training for healthcare professionals in Castanhal, in addition to collecting valuable epidemiological data that will be used in the development of future scientific publications.
