Brazil Welcomes New Brands of Slimming Pens

Biolab partners with Switzerland-based Sandoz to bring Owozy, a semaglutide product, to market

O The market for weight-loss pens continues to grow in Brazil. This week, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) approved the first generic version of semaglutide, manufactured by the pharmaceutical company EMS.

Semaglutide is a substance used to manage type 2 diabetes and for weight loss. As of March of this year, Novo Nordisk was the only pharmaceutical company with exclusive rights to use semaglutide. However, now that the term has expired, other companies can invest in its production.

A EMS was already an active player in the industry by developing—and obtaining approval from Anvisa—its own version of semaglutide, which has been named Ozivy. Under the pharmaceutical company’s loyalty program, the drug is priced at R$ 333.

Biolab and Sandoz

On Wednesday, the 19th, another Brazilian pharmaceutical company also announced that it will launch its own brand of weight-loss pens.
Biolab Farmacêutica, a group comprising six companies operating in various areas of health and nutrition, has entered into a partnership with the Swiss company Sandoz to launch Owozy—a medication based on synthetic semaglutide—in Brazil.

The new drug is expected to be available to the public by the fourth quarter of this year.
