Biolab offers medication for heart failure
The condition affects 2 million Brazilians
A Biolab Pharmaceuticals is expanding its presence in cardiology with the fixed-dose combination of sacubitril and valsartan. The drug joins the portfolio as a treatment option for approximately 2 million Brazilians living with heart failure (HF), according to data from the Ministry of Health.
The new treatment, which belongs to the class of INRAs (neprilysin and angiotensin receptor inhibitors), aims to reduce mortality and hospitalizations associated with the condition. The therapy works in two ways: by relaxing blood vessels and eliminating excess fluid, thereby reducing the heart’s workload.
The launch in Brazil is the result of a strategic co-marketing partnership between Biolab and Novartis. The initiative combines the market strength and extensive reach of the Brazilian pharmaceutical group with the Swiss multinational’s global expertise in innovation.
Heart failure is a serious condition
The situation in Brazil is critical, with the reporting of approximately 240,000 new cases annually. Characterized by the heart muscle’s inability to pump blood with sufficient force, the condition imposes severe limitations on patients, such as shortness of breath, swelling, and extreme fatigue.
Between 2011 and 2021, the SUS recorded more than 2.5 million hospitalizations for heart failure. Yet the challenge persists after discharge: the prognosis remains concerning, with approximately 50% of patients being readmitted within 90 days.
