Colic in babies is not a disease, but can be treated with special formulas in the absence of breastfeeding

Colic in babies sends shivers down the spine of most parents, because although it's not serious, clinically speaking, it has a significant impact on the quality of life of newborns and the whole family.

"As colic is not a disease, there is no treatment. However, it is possible to improve babies' condition by using nutritional formulas when they no longer receive breast milk. There are several options on the market. It is advisable to look for a specific formula, as this way it is possible to achieve effective action and ensure adequate nutrition for the little patient," explains Prof. Dr. Fábio Ancona, a pediatrician specializing in infant nutrition.

Colic is a functional disorder of the digestive system, common in early infancy, because soon after birth, the baby's body is not fully developed. One of the consequences is excess gas or unsynchronized bowel movements, which are the causes of abdominal pain.

When using specific nutritional formulas, it is always necessary to seek medical advice, as the child must not have any problems as a result of using them. Ideally, products with a low lactose content, so as not to exceed the baby's digestive capacity, prevent fermentation in the colon, which generates gas and bloating. As this patient is no longer fed by the mother, it is necessary to offer a proportion of proteins similar to that of breast milk.

"Studies with more than 600 infants have shown a reduction in colic symptoms in small patients who used specific formula. No less than 87% of the children evaluated had a reduction in the condition in the first month of use," says Prof. Dr. Fábio Ancona.

The most common symptoms of colic are non-stop crying, accompanied by movements of the legs and arms, indicating that the child is in pain. In these situations, the family tends to get stressed and use sympathies, recipes and indications without scientific proof. The most important thing is to ask the pediatrician for the most appropriate advice to solve the problem, and low-lactose supplements are an excellent option.
